Another important item. Gates and posts should be on site before starting.
For those who want to fit how to fit wooden gates. FAQs are answered in more detail here. Common requirements to fit wooden gates gates and posts. Identify the tools you require using the fitting instructions for your automation kit. Levels are listed first - they are very important

Laser level or Spirit level - as long as possible. If necessary borrow one at least a metre long. Plumb line (or spirit level for vertical)

  • Other hand tools - wood chisels, screwdrivers, adjustable spanners to 3/4 inch capacity
  • Power drill with minimum 3/8 chuck preferred
  • Extension cable RCD
  • Post hole tool
  • Ramming bar
  • Spade
  • Auger or flat bit when using timber posts
  • Masonry bits for fixings
  • Trowel
  • Square
  • Pencil
  • Chalk

Check whether gates will open over level ground. Take account of any slope when setting post heights. Use a level with pegs and timber battens supported by bricks or whatever is convenient to ensure that the gates when fitted will be level in between the posts.

First - refer to your sketch plan showing measurements and details of

  • whether gates are to be hung behind or between the posts
  • the needs of your choice of automation if appropriate

Then dig the holes. Ensure that ground clearance for the gates in closed position is sufficient and that the posts can be set at the same height.

Hole depth is dependant on types of gates and ground condition but will need to be set in concrete. Gate supplier should advise on this. For example a pair of boarded gates to cover 12 feet at over 4 feet high would generally need to be hung on 7 or 8 inch posts at about 3 feet into the ground.

This is the time to ensure that the ground clearance is sufficient when the gates are opened.

Dig the hole for the first post to the appropriate depth but having vertical sides about 16/18 inches across (400 / 500mm)  A simple option is to use ready made ballast from a builders merchant.

Check that the post is upright and to the correct height, and sitting on concrete then fill with concrete to slightly over ground level. Use props to ensure post is vertical in both directions.  Ram the concrete and use a trowel to slope the concrete to ensure rainwater runs away from posts.

The second post will be sited after checking again the width required - depending on the hinges to be used.

Whatever hinge system is in use the requirement will be for the top hinges' crooks to be level. It follows that the hinges should be fitted to the gates to the same position relative to the top rail.
