Treatment  of wooden gates should exclude transparent, non-flexible, film-forming finishes such as lacquer, shellac, urethane, and varnish. These are not recommended for exterior use on wood. Ultraviolet radiation can penetrate the transparent film and degrade the wood. Regardless of the number of coats, the finish will eventually become brittle, develop severe cracks and then fail.

In other words they permit the wood to breathe.

Hardwood Iroko Gates should be treated with 2 – 3 coats of a vapour permeable wood stain prior to hanging. The timber will weather unless regularly treated.
